Saturday, April 19, 2008 Hideaway Day 1

Do you ever feel you're on a treadmill running and running and running? Sometimes I feel like a gerbal on one of those wheels with no end in sight.

I know without a doubt a healthy balance to life includes enough relaxation to fuel our minds and souls, but it's hard to make yourself get off the wheel. This isn't anything new to our generation or our period in time on earth. Humans have a built in drive close to the Energizer Bunny. We keep going and going and going. That wheel is not going to stop until you get off. We are fueling the wheel.

I know this, but it's still hard to take time for ourselves. Even when I know it is required, I feel guilty for taking the time. It's as though we have to wait until the doctor writes a note and says "You have to take some time off or you will die" before we feel worthy of taking the time off. Why do we feel guilty for taking care of ourselves?

My family has had a condo in Breckenridge Colorado for the past 30 years and since I was flying past it on my way back from Montana, I elected to steal some time for myself. Yep, just me and my quilt.

"I woke to clear skies and snow. The fresh air feels so good. It's like you can't breath in enough of it. Oh wait, at 9500' you really can't get enough air! gasp, where's my oxygen?"

"The skies are clear and the temperature is 70 degrees. Since it snowed just last week, the streets and sidewalks are clear, but everywhere else is SNOW!"

"During the summer I sit here on the banks of the Blue River and sun while I read. Not today."

"The snow is melting and you can see the river although the water is bare. During the summer this spot will be over a foot deep with hard running water. Dogs and children will play in this very spot."

"I sat in the square and read my book while I drank a latte. I got to pet lots of doggies and chatted with those wearing Cardinal caps. One lady who stopped to see what I was reading had just moved here from Columbus Ohio. I envy that she could just up and move like that. We had a great chat. The spring sun was hot and my arms and face burned. There won't be hiding the fact that I took time off when I return home with a tan. Crap, the guilt is kicking in. NOT!"

"As I head home for the day I look back down over the historical town of Breckenridge."

"This is a strange season where some are skiing and others were biking. People in ski suits while others are in shorts. I love it.........."
